Hurricane Lisa has made landfall in the Central American country of Belize. The tropical cyclone hit the coast on Wednesday (local time) near Belize City with sustained wind speeds of up to 140 kilometers per hour, according to the US hurricane center NHC.

"Lisa" had developed into a hurricane of the lowest magnitude one out of five over the Caribbean on its way to the 400,000-inhabitant country. Shortly before arrival, the authorities had set up emergency shelters and closed airports. The hurricane caused heavy rain, violent winds and flooding.

A hurricane warning has been issued for the Bay Islands in Honduras, the entire coast of Belize and the stretch of coast between Chetumal and Costa Maya in southeastern Mexico. The effects of the storm were also felt in Guatemala. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th.
