School policy: State parents' council calls for veto rights in school policy

The chairman of the State Parents' Advisory Council (LEB) calls for more rights of co-determination in school politics. "Parents should have the right to veto fundamental issues of education policy," said Michael Mittelstaedt of the "Südwest Presse" (Wednesday) in Ulm. If a parents' council rejects an initiative by a school management or the LEB rejects an initiative by the Ministry of Education, nothing happens. "It has no effect. It can't be," said Mittelstaedt.

"This body, like the state school and state student advisory board, is only a decorative accessory that can participate in completely irrelevant issues by being heard," criticized the chairman. In his view, in the event of a veto, citizens' councils could make a binding proposal from 100 randomly selected citizens who are informed, like a mediation committee.
