Santísimo Cristo de la Guía and San Juan de Sahagún: Prolific presence of the Pavonians in Vicálvaro

The parish of Santísimo Cristo de la Guía and San Juan de Sahagún, territorially the smallest of the parishes of a Vicálvaro with old roads and rejuvenated areas, at this stage of its long history bears the charism of the religious Sons of Mary Immaculate , founded by Ludovico Pavoni, commonly known as Pavonians.

They arrived at the parish on October 1, 2010 after a significant presence in the Proyecto Hombre Madrid, for which they have been responsible since its foundation in this diocese in 1984. The decision to assume a parish stems from the service and dedication of these religious.

Currently there are eight who live in the community served by the parish, although they also work in the Proyecto Hombre and are involved in diocesan prison ministry.

The parish priest is Fr. Marcelo Rodríguez Blanco and is assisted by Fr. Fernando Marinas Jimeno. Two brothers from the community take care of the work with children, young people and adolescents. In addition, they now have the presence of two young religious who are studying.

The charism of the Pavonians is intimately linked to the formation of children and young people. As stated on the official website of the Congregation in Spain, «the purpose of our Family is assistance, education and school, professional, human and Christian training of children and young people in difficult situations. In educational and assistance action, we follow the Pavonian educational method, the preventive method called emulation and honor. This method invites us to fully trust and believe in young people, assuming risks, in a personalized treatment that has Jesus Christ as a model educator.

As can be deduced from the name of the parish, the current community is the fusion of a long history of the presence of the Church in Vicálvaro. News of the existence of a hermitage dedicated to Christ on the edge of the road that led to Madrid comes from an inveterate tradition. On August 15, 1965, the parish of Santísimo Cristo de la Guía was erected, which could have its own temple, after a tour of various locations, in 1972. The parish of San Juan de Sahagún was born in September 1971 in a local from the San Filemón passage, next to Calahorra street. The temple, which is the current one, was inaugurated by the then vicar Agustín García Gasco on December 25, 1978. As can be seen, it is a simple temple, with a circular floor plan, with light, which has a beautiful image of San Juan de Sahagún , Augustinian religious and patron saint of the city of Salamanca. Currently, the parish, which responds to a union, also the result of historical circumstances, has both temples open for worship, thus facilitating access to the sacraments for older people in the area.

In a neighborhood where lifelong faithful live together, elderly people who made possible the miracle of a Spain of development, with recent immigration, mostly from Latin America, the main activity of the parish, in addition to the wide range of training , leisure and free time for children and young people, is charity. At the moment, 120 families, about 400 people, are being served with food and help to pay rent, which are not minor in the area. There is also a special dedication to young people through the CEM, with private classes and activities in that necessary school support. In the parish, training is not only for young people, it also affects adults, with Bible and Christian doctrine groups.

One of the challenges that is being worked on pastorally is, according to Fr. Marcelo, attention to young couples, parents of children who come to catechism and those who take their children to the activities of a parish that It has the advantage of having a large sports area that allows plenty of recreational activities. Some premises of the other temple are also used for coexistence and the meeting of young people. The influx of children to catechism is not less. One of the most striking characteristics is that after the first communion they mostly continue their formative processes until confirmation. Soon six adults will also receive this sacrament.

The availability of the religious for the celebration of the popular devotions of the faithful from the most diverse countries of America in the parish is highly appreciated. One more fact of the closeness and the spirit of welcome and home of this community.
