Rhineland-Palatinate: iron bars, glass bottles: 40 people attack the police

In a violent attack during a police operation on Friday night, around 40 people attacked the police with iron bars and glass bottles, among other things. At least five officers were injured, a police spokesman said in the morning.

Previously, several patrol crews had been called to a nightclub in Trier-West because of alleged bodily harm.

During the operation, the situation escalated to such an extent that, according to the information, around 40 people spontaneously ganged up to attack the officials, it was said. A man is said to have thrown a shopping cart in the direction of the emergency services, causing a life-threatening situation. An officer then had to fire two warning shots. Two men were taken into custody, others are at large.

"I have never experienced such an outbreak of violence against emergency services in my time as head of the Trier police station," said police director Christian Hamm in a press release.
