Professional football and motherhood: Ex-national goalkeeper Almuth Schult: “I have always fought against prejudices”

Ms. Schult, you had your third child in August. How are your nights? Varied. When the little one sleeps well, one of the twins likes to wake up.

Will the children sing “Happy Birthday”? The grown-ups sure, they like the song and always think of a funny ending.

You are one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Do you always want to win? Yes, of course. I think that is the goal of every competitive athlete. At least where it feels good, during competition. But I am also the coach of our hometown club’s Bambini team. I let one or two balls get through. Not everyone, however. I don't think you should just let the little ones win all the time. You also have to learn to lose.
