Process: Vault Emptied: Many had access to keys

Significant security gaps have become known in the process of an empty vault of the Düsseldorfer Kreissparkasse. "Everyone who works there was able to access the keys. That gives me a bit of a headache," said the presiding judge at the Düsseldorf district court on Thursday at the end of the hearing in the civil case.

The Kreissparkasse Düsseldorf would like to have the missing sum of 934,000 euros reimbursed by its insurance company, but it is blocked.

The bank employees interviewed as witnesses agreed that three keys were needed to get from the room with the customer lockers through two doors into the vault. But these three keys were kept together in a cassette that practically every employee had access to - and no account was kept of their use.

The processes have since changed. The money is kept elsewhere, assured the manager of the branch in Erkrath, from whose vault the money disappeared on June 26, 2019. The police investigations were dropped because the suspicion against anyone could be substantiated.

While the district savings bank argues that it could have been a burglary and that there are corresponding signs, the defendant insurance company denies this. The question of whether the sum must be reimbursed depends on this. The court set a hearing date for November 17.
