Process: Truck driver admits drunk driving through Fürth

A truck driver accused of devastating drunk driving through a residential street in Fürth has admitted the allegations in court. The 51-year-old explained to his defense attorney that he had noticed that he was under the influence of alcohol, but thought it would be fine.

He drank vodka on the afternoon of February 8 because he was planning to spend the night in Fürth. But then he had to clear the parking space and planned to only drive to the next parking lot. The lawyer said he heard a bang but drove on. "From then on his memories are blurred or gone."

The public prosecutor's office accuses the 51-year-old of having drunk a semi-trailer truck loaded with steel parts and driving through a red traffic light on February 8, ramming a car and injuring the driver. Then the man is said to have thundered down a residential street at 70 km/h. He is said to have grazed and rammed several parked cars. Finally, he pushed several vehicles into each other and came to a stop in front of an apartment building.

According to the prosecution, the truck went up in flames there, and the fire spread to an apartment building. Several residents had to climb over a wall in the backyard because the front door was locked. A total of four people were injured in the devastation, more than 30 cars were demolished and several houses were damaged. The total damage amounts to around 800,000 euros. On the first day of the trial, numerous witnesses were to testify, including the injured.
