New Year's Eve: Police secure 250 tons of illegal firecrackers

According to their own statements, German and Dutch police officers secured an estimated 250 tons of fireworks. The dangerous firecrackers were stored in a bunker in the German border region near Enschede and were intended for illegal sale to private individuals, according to the Osnabrück police department and the Dutch police. Two people were arrested accordingly.

"A lot of the fireworks found are banned for Dutch consumers because they are too dangerous," said Jack Sijm, fireworks expert at the Dutch police. Fireworks of the heaviest category were found, which were not permitted in either Germany or the Netherlands.

The suspects said the fireworks were for sale on their website. The goods could then be picked up in firework shops in Germany. In the Netherlands there had been searches in The Hague, Enschede and Haaksbergen.
