Munich 1972: Agreement reached on compensation for the attack on the Olympics

Shortly before the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Olympics attack, the German government and the families of the Israeli victims reached an agreement on compensation payments. This was announced on Wednesday by former Interior Minister Gerhart Baum (FDP) of the German Press Agency. The lawyer, together with colleagues from a Düsseldorf law firm, represented the bereaved in the negotiations.

"The agreement also enables a dignified commemoration on September 5 in the presence of Presidents Izchak Herzog and Frank-Walter Steinmeier and, above all, in the presence of the bereaved who have agreed to take part in the celebration under the new circumstances," Baum continued . The agreement does not only contain material and immaterial recognition services. "It is just as important for the relatives to come to terms with what happened at the time - now with disclosure of all sources."

As the German Press Agency also learned from government circles, a compensation sum of 28 million euros had recently been discussed. The federal government should pay 22.5 million euros, the state of Bavaria 5 million euros and the city of Munich 500,000 euros.

In the afternoon, government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit also announced the agreement. The day before, the star had already reported exclusively that an agreement was imminent.

A Palestinian terrorist squad broke into the Munich Olympic complex 50 years ago and took members of the Israeli team hostage. Eleven Israeli athletes and a German policeman died in the hostage-taking and a failed rescue operation.
