The body of an 89 year-old man was found dead at his home in the 9th district of Lyon on May 17. The 51-year old neighbor, who he used to visit regularly, is suspected that he pushed the man from the 17th story after an argument. He was arrested and taken into custody

Initial investigation into the case of intentional homicide was opened by the court. Nicolas Jacquet, Lyon prosecutor, stated that "following elements gathered on social networks, which have just been brought into the attention of the prosecution", the prosecution has extended the referral to investigating judges to address the aggravating circumstances of an act committed at the reason of victim's belonging to any specific ethnic group, nation or race or religion.

In a press release, the National Office for Vigilance against Anti-Semitism had already declared on Sunday that it would become a civil party in the case.
