Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: After a knife attack on police officers: the attacker was shot

After the deadly shot by a police officer at a 32-year-old attacker on Friday evening in Jarmen (West Pomerania-Greifswald), the circumstances of the incident remain open for the time being. As a police spokeswoman in Neubrandenburg said, the criminal investigation is also ongoing over the weekend. The responsible public prosecutor's office in Stralsund will inform about the results on Monday at the earliest.

According to previous knowledge, the man was in an exceptional psychological situation and in this state attacked one of the police officers who had been summoned with a knife. The officer was reportedly seriously injured and had to be taken to a hospital. In the course of this argument, the firearm was used against the 32-year-old German suspect. The aim was to "make the man unable to attack," the police said in a statement. He succumbed to the serious gunshot wounds at the scene, a private property.

It was initially unclear why the man attacked the officers with a knife and who had previously alerted the police. According to media reports, the incident happened not far from the center of the small town in Western Pomerania. As the daily newspaper "Nordkurier" reported, the crews of several patrol cars, paramedics and firefighters were involved in the operation. According to NDR information, the injured police officer is 47 years old. He was the first to arrive with two other colleagues. It was not disclosed who fired the fatal shot.
