Massive failures expected: no buses and subways: warning strike at HVV in Hamburg

Because of a warning strike at Hamburger Hochbahn, users of subways and buses have to be prepared for restrictions and cancellations on Wednesday. Passengers should be prepared for the fact that neither subways nor buses are running and check whether destinations can be reached with other companies' means of transport, the HVV reported.

The strike is scheduled to begin at 3 a.m. Wednesday morning and end at 3 a.m. Thursday morning. The S-Bahn, regional trains and the bus lines of the bus companies affiliated with the HVV such as the VHH (Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein GmbH) will not be on strike. Nevertheless, passengers should expect that these are significantly fuller than normal. However, no statements can be made about specific operational restrictions due to the 24-hour warning strike.

The Verdi trade union wants to use the warning strike to express its demand for more salary and is demanding 600 euros more monthly wages for the employees. According to the ideas of the union, the collective agreement should have a term of twelve months. Apprentices should also receive an additional 258 euros per month and a free professional ticket for local public transport. The second hearing last Thursday was unsuccessful. According to its own statements, the elevated railway had submitted a modified offer.

According to union information, in the second round of negotiations with a term of 21 months, the employer side offered an increase of 4.5 percent retroactive to January 1 and an increase of 130 euros to the table as of January 1, 2024. In addition, the employer offers a tax-free inflation compensation premium of 3,000 euros.

The next hearing with the employers is scheduled for Thursday.
