Labor dispute: security staff at BER on warning strike: flights are cancelled

Travelers have to be prepared again for significant delays and cancellations at the capital's BER airport on Monday. With the start of the morning shift at 3:30 a.m., a day-long warning strike by security personnel began that night. "As announced, there are no departures," said an airport spokesman on Monday of the German Press Agency. This means that around 200 starts have been canceled and around 27,000 passengers are affected. According to the airport spokesman, around a third of the incoming flights have also been cancelled.

"The effects are massive," said a spokesman for the Verdi union. This had called for the all-day industrial action, which should last until midnight. According to Verdi, the background to this is unsuccessful collective bargaining for the payment of aviation security employees for work at inconvenient times. Verdi expected around 300 participants at BER, in the early morning there were around 50. A rally is planned in front of the BER terminal on Willy-Brandt-Platz.

The security forces at Hamburg and Hanover airports have also stopped work. The employees of Bremen Airport were also called to the warning strike. The work stoppage at the north German airports should also have an impact on other locations.

Airports advised travelers to check flight status with their airline. According to a dpa reporter, only a few unsuspecting passengers were stranded at the capital's airport on Monday morning.

The airport association ADV criticized the action: travelers would once again become a pawn in the labor dispute. The announcement came at short notice. The passengers would hardly have a chance to look for alternatives. According to ADV, a total of around 350 departures have been canceled. 45,000 passengers are directly affected. A total of almost 100,000 affected passengers can be expected, as flights from other airports will also be cancelled.

Already last January there were significant restrictions due to strikes at BER. At that time, central work areas had been on strike for a whole day and flight operations had been completely suspended for the whole day. Around 35,000 passengers were affected by the fact that around 300 take-offs and landings were canceled.
