In fighting between the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and pro-Turkish groups, almost 60 people have died within ten days. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and a correspondent for news agency AFP reported on Tuesday. It was the fiercest fighting in years.
The US Embassy in Syria said on Twitter that it was "alert" about the advance of the "terrorist" HTS. The US embassy called for the jihadist group to withdraw immediately from the region.
Since the HTS offensive, several hundred people have taken part in protest rallies against the group. This controls half of the province of Idlib, the last bastion of insurgents and jihadists in Syria. Almost 500,000 people have been killed in the war in Syria since 2011.
