TEHRAN (Iran) -- Iranian authorities announced Friday that they had arrested 13 burglars who broke into the vault of a Tehran State Bank from a nearby building and took 168 safe deposit boxes.

Iran's state-run IRNA news agency reported that Ali Salehi, Tehran Prosecutor, stated that three suspects were taken into custody in an unknown country overseas while the other two were detained in Tehran and the northern part of Iran. The prosecutor said that a car with stolen property was discovered abandoned at Imam Khomeini Airport.

Television footage showed jewelry, gold coins, and bundles with dollar bills being laid out on a long table.

The gang allegedly also stole surveillance cameras, other monitoring equipment, from the bank. It is located near Tehran University and within walking distance to a police station.

Theocratic Iran is not known for bank robberies. The suspects can face long prison sentences if convicted.
