The US consumer protection authority FTC wants to impose new restrictions on the Facebook group Meta. Meta is to be banned from releasing new products or functions without being checked by a data protection supervisor, as the FTC announced yesterday.
The group should also no longer be allowed to use data from users under the age of 18 commercially. Meta criticized the plans as a political action and wants to fight back.
The currently three FTC members will decide on the proposals that Meta can comment on in the process. Meta can then go to court.
The FTC accuses Meta of violating data protection regulations, which in turn were imposed for violations. Among other things, software developers had unjustified access to user data in some cases. The Facebook group last received further data protection requirements in 2020.
