Interior ministers want to create a situational picture of the climate group last generation

Herrmann said the last generation was "a tight organization". "The security experts should compile how this is evaluated." The question is whether the last generation, which is responsible for a series of protest actions, is classified as a criminal organization. Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) said that the interior ministers would not make the determination. "The conclusion as to whether it is a criminal organization is a decision that the courts make."

Meanwhile, the last generation announced further protest actions for the coming weeks and months. "We will not be dissuaded," said spokeswoman Carla Hinrichs. The protest will be peaceful, "but it will become more intense." The last generation repeatedly blocked roads, especially in Berlin and Munich. There were also actions at airports and protests in museums and other cultural institutions, in which activists threw food at pictures and then stuck them on. The group's actions are highly controversial.

The climate protests were one of a large number of IMK topics, and Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) also took part in the talks. Faeser announced that before Christmas he would introduce a draft law for better protection of critical infrastructures in the cabinet. The systems would have to be better protected against failures. As Faeser said, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) is to be expanded into a central office. The protection of the infrastructure has "top priority" for the federal government.

As IMK chairman Herrmann said, there is a compromise in the dispute over the expansion of the siren network. The federal government now wants to work with the federal states to launch a funding program that will start in 2024. The five and a half million euros budgeted so far are "not even remotely sufficient".

In addition, the federal states agreed to suspend deportations to Iran in view of the tense situation there. Exceptions are only made for dangerous individuals and serious crimes, said Herrmann. The deportations are suspended "until further notice".

Faeser welcomed the uniform approach of the federal states as "a good and correct signal". The political leadership in Iran is letting the peaceful protest of the population be put down. Everything that is possible to protect courageous Iranian civil society must therefore be done in this country, said Faeser.

With a view to taking in refugees, Herrmann said that the states and municipalities were at their limit. The influx of refugees must therefore be limited. The federal government must implement its announced repatriation initiative in a timely manner.
