Hypothyroidism: The thyroid is not working properly in every third adult – that’s what’s behind it

Unless it causes problems, most people don't even know it exists - or where it is. The thyroid nestles beneath the larynx (also: Adam's apple) in the shape of a butterfly around the thyroid cartilage and upper trachea and, like any organ, is surrounded by a capsule of connective tissue. You can't see them from the outside and you can hardly touch them. In tiny vesicles (follicles), which are bundled to form the two lateral lobes on the right and left of the trachea, it produces and stores hormones incessantly: messenger substances for the bones and intestines, cardiovascular system and muscles, nerves and psyche. The thyroid affects almost every area of our lives.
