Hockey: German hockey team start with two victories in EM

The German women's hockey team started the European Indoor Championships in Hamburg with two victories. In their opening match, the team of national coach Valentin Altenburg, which is one of the favourites, defeated Turkey 11:2 (5:1) in the Hanseatic city on Wednesday. In the second group match in the evening, the German women managed an equally smooth 8:0 (3:0) win over Austria.

"It was a good start to the tournament because we need these games to warm up," said Altenburg, who was expelled from the coaching zone in the middle of the final quarter for complaining by the referee and watched the rest of the game from the stands. In addition to Sara Strauss (4), his wife Lisa Altenburg (2) was the top scorer. "The goal difference can definitely play a role. That's why I'm glad that we put a lot of effort into scoring in both games," the coach praised his team.

In front of a good 1000 spectators in the Hamburg sports hall, Lisa Altenburg (5), Sonja Zimmermann, Pia Maertens and Anne Schröder (all 2) scored the goals for the team against Turkey in the opening match. The men only get involved in the EM event on Thursday.
