Health Insurance Association: Additional contribution for those with statutory health insurance increases by only 0.2 percentage points

According to the Central Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds, the additional health insurance contribution for those with statutory health insurance will increase by an average of 0.2 percentage points to 1.5 percent at the beginning of 2023. The increase is likely to be somewhat lower than expected, said GKV chairwoman Doris Pfeiffer to the newspapers of the Funke media group on Wednesday. The Federal Ministry of Health assumed an increase of 0.3 points. So far, the GKV has received announcements from more than 50 health insurance companies (out of a total of 97), which together represent more than 85 percent of the GKV members.

The money is expected to be sufficient for the coming year, said Pfeiffer. "In the years that follow, the situation becomes tricky if nothing happens." At the latest in the course of the spring, a political decision must be made as to how to proceed with the financing of statutory health insurance, which has a billion-dollar deficit. Among other things, the head of the association demanded that the federal government take over the entire health insurance costs for recipients of citizen benefits. In addition, the VAT for pharmaceuticals should be reduced from 19 to seven percent.

Anyone who receives a premium increase as an insured person has a special right of termination. The respective additional contribution for their members is determined by the individual funds themselves, it can deviate from the average value. The total contribution without reduction this year is on average 15.9 percent of income.
