Hamburg: When Christmas trees fly onto ships

Many Christmas trees were distributed to seafarers in the port of Hamburg on Friday who are at sea for the festival. "We distributed around 50 trees in total," said Werner Koop from the Nordmann Information Center of the German Press Agency in Hamburg. The campaign, which is supported by sponsors and the port industry, has been around since 1997.

The Nordmann information center has set itself the task of giving seafarers a Christmas tree to take with them on their journey. This requires throwing technique: the fir trees are thrown over the railing with momentum. According to the organizers, a throw rope is used for the very large ships. The tree should also remind the seafarers of their visit to the Hanseatic city. "Every year we see how happy seafarers are, no matter what culture they come from," said Koop.
