A special SPD party conference had already approved the coalition agreement on Saturday, which is to be officially signed on Monday. The re-election of Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) in the constituent meeting of the new state parliament in Hanover is then planned for Tuesday.

A new state parliament was elected in Lower Saxony around four weeks ago. The SPD clearly won the polls, the Greens became the third strongest party behind the CDU. The SPD and the Greens had already announced during the election campaign that they wanted to form an alliance. They successfully completed their coalition negotiations on Monday. Both parties had governed together from 2013 to 2017.
