Greece claims it has stopped the entry of 40,000 migrants from Evros

The Minister of Civil Protection stated that around 40,000 migrants tried to enter the country illegally in the first four months 2022. However, they were stopped by border police. Because the Evros river is low, it is causing the number of attempted crossings to be high. This is the border between Greece, Turkey and Greece. The minister stated that Turkey is not authorized to allow trafficking of desperate people or to assist them in crossing the border.

On Monday, Greece announced that it had stopped a attempt by 600 people to cross the Aegean sea to Greece from Turkey. This was the largest attempt this year. According to Athens, the Greek coastguard used "visual- and sound signals" in order to stop them passing through Greek waters. The Turkish Coast Guard intercepted others and some of them turned around.

According to the Ministry of Migration, the number of migrants in the first four months of this year is nearly 30% more than the same period last years.
