Good news: Bridge days 2023: This is how you easily double your annual leave

First the bad news: The new year only starts well for three federal states. Because after the disappointing start with New Year's Day on January 1st, which falls on a Sunday in 2023, only the residents of the federal states of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Saxony-Anhalt can be happy: For them, the day of the Three Kings is considered a legal one Holiday.

Since January 6th is a Friday, the first weekend of the new year is already suitable for an extended one. Or if you submit four days, you can start the first week of the new year in a very relaxed manner: if you take four days off in the three federal states, you can go on vacation for nine days.

For the first time in 2023, after Berlin, March 8th will also be a public holiday in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: International Women's Day falls on a Wednesday - ideal for bridge builders in the second week of March.

For all federal states, April will only be attractive again: Easter 2023, with Good Friday on April 7th and Easter Monday on April 10th, is a little earlier than in the previous year. But the Easter days are an ideal opportunity to get a lot of free time with a few days of vacation. There are two options: Anyone who submits four days of vacation to their employer before Good Friday can plan a ten-day trip.

The same applies to the later combination: If you submit four days of vacation from April 3rd to 6th, ten days of vacation are also available - ideal for a flight to Mallorca, for example. The best is the long Easter version, through which skilful bridge builders can travel 16 days with only eight days from the vacation account.

Things are going well in May. Labor Day, May 1st, finally falls on a weekday again, on a Monday.

It gets even more interesting in the middle of the month: Ascension Day falls on Thursday, May 18th. The following Friday offers itself as a bridging day. And in 2023 Pentecost also falls in May. Those who include Whit Monday on May 29th in their holiday planning have twelve days off in a row with only six days of holiday. This applies to all states.

Anyone who lives in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate or Saarland has another long weekend in mind in June: Corpus Christi, which is always celebrated on a Thursday, falls on June 8th in 2023 . With a bridging day on Friday, four days off beckon - with four days from the vacation account even a whole vacation week.

All employees in Saarland and some in Bavaria have an additional holiday bonus. In these federal states, the Ascension Day (Tuesday, August 15) is a public holiday in the middle of the summer holidays - a free day that does not reduce the holiday account. In the federal state of Bavaria, the proportion of Catholics is decisive for whether or not work has to be done in a city or municipality on this day.

There are no national holidays in September, with one exception: In Thuringia, International Children's Day, which is celebrated on Wednesday, September 20th, is considered a work-free day.

The next nationwide holiday is the Day of German Unity on October 3rd, which falls on a Tuesday in 2023 - again ingeniously suitable for a bridging day on the Monday before. Or nine days of vacation time are available through four submitted vacation days.

A second possibility for bridge builders for a long weekend arises with Reformation Day on October 31, a Tuesday. The residents of Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia can look forward to this holiday.

A day later, residents in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland are happy. On Wednesday, November 1st, they do not have to show up for work. All Saints' Day is a public holiday there. With four vacation days submitted, this results in a calculated time-out of nine days.

During the course of November there is another special feature: Saxony is the only federal state in which the Day of Prayer and Repentance is considered a work-free day. Wednesday, November 22nd should once again stimulate the imagination of bridge builders.

Christmas 2023 compensates all employees of the past years. Because at the end of the year comes the grand finale: planning the Christmas holidays is a lot of fun. Christmas Day falls on a Monday, Christmas Day on a Tuesday - and New Year's Day 2024 will be on a Monday. Anyone who has saved a small amount of vacation throughout the year makes the best cut: Simply submit vacation from December 27th to 29th and say goodbye to colleagues for ten days until seeing you again in the new year - with only three days Deduction from vacation account.

The professionals among the bridge builders who include the beginning of 2024 in their planning are even better off: With four more vacation days in the first week of January 2024, you can take 16 days off for just six vacation days.

2023 is a very worker-friendly year. If you plan cleverly and submit your vacation days early, you can more than double the usual vacation quota of 30 days.
