Fried – The Politics Column: Why Olaf Scholz would have good reasons not to wish the very best for the German footballers in Qatar

The funniest thing was when Germany didn't win. That was in 2002 when Edmund Stoiber ran for chancellorship. Stoiber flew to the final of the soccer World Cup, which the national team lost to Brazil in Yokohama, Japan. On his return he was asked for his comments at the airport in Frankfurt. And it went like this: "If you have a trio up front like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and, uh, and the other Brazilians, Roberto Carlos, that's, uh, that's, uh, Rivaldo on top of that, Rivaldo, uh, uh, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho and Ronaldo, so losing that is bitter, but not that bitter."
