Pupils found a hand grenade during a hike in the forest near Wachenheim (Bad Dürkheim district). The school class discovered the suspicious object on Thursday, the police said on Friday. This turned out to be a French practice hand grenade, "which would only produce a loud bang when activated," it said. The explosive ordnance clearance service removed the grenade.

According to the police, there was never any danger for the children or hikers because the detonator was missing. The officials advised that if such suspicious objects were found, the responsible regulatory authority or the police should be informed immediately.
