MADRID, 17 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, stressed on Tuesday that it is "obvious" that Spain "is not a multinational state" but a nation and has criticized that some take advantage of an "error" in some Popular Party statements that were " rectified" shortly after being formulated.

This is how Feijóo has spoken from Ceuta, after the controversy opened by some statements in 'El Mundo' by the coordinator of the PP, Elías Bendodo, assuring that Spain is a multinational State and Catalonia is a "nationality of the State, like any other CCAA" , some words harshly criticized by Cs and Vox. Bendodo himself later stated that he had not explained himself correctly and stressed that Spain is an "indissoluble nation of 17 autonomies with its own identity".

When expressly asked about this matter, Feijóo stated that "what Spain is is defined" by its history "500 years ago". According to him, he added, Spain is "very well catalogued, identified and described in article two of the Spanish Constitution".

In this sense, he stressed that this article "guarantees the indissoluble unity of the Spanish nation, the common and indivisible homeland of all Spaniards", while "guaranteeing the right to autonomy of the nationalities and regions that comprise it".

Feijóo has highlighted that the PP "was born to write" the Magna Carta, as well as to "fulfill and defend it". "Therefore, it is evident that Spain is not a multinational state. It is obvious. Therefore, in my opinion, the debate does not exist. If what you want is to take advantage of an error, each one is legitimate to do so", he pointed out, although he has highlighted that this "error has been rectified shortly after".

In this sense, the leader of the opposition has insisted that "effectively Spain is not a multinational State". "It is not and will not be. Spain is a nation that guarantees the autonomy of nationalities and regions, and that seeks solidarity between all of them," he said, adding that this is reflected in the Constitution and is the ideology that it also defends the People's Party.

Feijóo has made these statements after meeting with the Chamber of Commerce and the Confederation of Entrepreneurs of the autonomous city together with the regional president, Juan Jesús Vivas. He will also hold a meeting with union representatives of the State Security Forces and Bodies and also plans to chair the Board of Directors of the PP of Ceuta.

In his statement to the media, Feijóo has expressed the PP's "commitment" to "the Spanish and secular Ceuta", as well as to all the citizens of the autonomous city. "My presence here today is a message of the Spanishness of Ceuta and Melilla and, therefore, of the integrity of the Spanish nation", he has proclaimed.

In addition, he has indicated that he was clear that one of his first visits as president of the PP, once the Presidency of the Xunta had been handed over, was to travel to Ceuta and reaffirm "strict compliance with the Constitution, international treaties" and "restart from the trust in the neighborly relationship with Morocco that the PP has always maintained and will continue to do in the future".
