Rising food prices and increased veterinary costs are also felt at the Berlin association Notguinea pigs. Many owners are currently giving their guinea pigs back there. "We have many returnees, i.e. animals that we have mediated, where the partner animals have died and the attitude is not continued," said Anne Eckardt-Wagner from the emergency guinea pig association of the German Press Agency. The association has been observing this development more and more since October.

Members of the association run 26 private foster homes for guinea pigs in Berlin and other federal states, of which 15 are currently active, according to the association. They take in animals that are given away and pass them on to new owners.
