The phenomenon has been repeating itself for months, but it has only now really stirred up excitement: the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) publishes early data on deaths in Germany at short intervals. And again and again there have been an above-average number recently.

"Excess mortality" is the name of the phenomenon, which means that there are more deaths than the average for the same period in previous years. In the most recent report at the beginning of October, it was 20 percent above the average for the years 2018 to 2021. For the indicators linked to this data collection, this always means a change for the worse: This also applies to the calculated life expectancy of Germans as a whole automatically decreased as a result of the unfavorable new statistics.
