According to a media report, at least 46 people died after a magnitude 5.6 earthquake on the Indonesian island of Java. As the TV station MetroTV reported on Monday, citing local authorities, 300 people were injured in the earthquake southwest of the city of Cianjur.

Many houses were badly damaged. Videos on social media showed collapsed buildings and people crying. Debris lay everywhere on the streets.

The earthquake happened on Monday afternoon (local time) near the capital Jakarta on the island of Java. The epicenter was a few kilometers southwest of the town of Cianjur. This is also where the greatest damage occurred.

The earthquake was also clearly felt in Jakarta itself. High-rise buildings swayed, however, no major damage was reported in the metropolis. According to the US Earthquake Monitor (USGS), the quake took place at a depth of ten kilometers. There was no tsunami warning.

The island nation of Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most geologically active zone on earth. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common there.
