Education: 1579 student assistants at Saxony-Anhalt's universities

In Saxony-Anhalt, 1579 students are currently employed as student assistants at the state's universities. This emerges from a response from the state government to a small request from the state parliament member Hendrik Lange (left). According to this, most of the student assistants are at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg (612), followed by the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg (325) and the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences (217).

In the letter, the Ministry of Science refers to the requirements of the Minimum Wage Act. The universities were informed about this. "All universities have, where necessary, made appropriate contractual adjustments with the student assistants and will pay the statutory minimum wage of twelve euros per hour for student assistants from October 1, 2022."

Lange told the German Press Agency on Tuesday that student assistants would benefit from the increase in the minimum wage. At the same time, the universities would compete for staff with other employers who would also pay the minimum wage. "At some point you will have to go beyond this sum," said Lange, referring to the universities. The aim must be to continue to recruit students as assistants.
