A building complex in Düsseldorf was evacuated after a basement fire on Friday night. 133 people were rescued from their homes, 6 of them were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, said a spokesman for the fire brigade. The operation began shortly before 2 a.m., and the clean-up work was still going on late in the afternoon.

There is a basement connection in two houses, where smoke and flames spread, it said. One of the two buildings is not habitable, the operator is taking care of an alternative place to stay for those affected, the fire brigade spokesman reported. The city will provide accommodation if necessary. A water pipe burst in a third building, temporarily disrupting the water supply. The eight-story residential complex also includes other buildings that are not affected.

The "WAZ" had also reported on the evacuation. The cause is still being determined.
