District of Oberhavel: On short legs to the finish: Dachshund races in Oberkrämer

Only speed counts: According to the organizers, 60 four-legged friends started at the dachshund race in Oberkrämer (Oberhavel district) in Brandenburg on Sunday. That was a record, said a spokeswoman. The dogs had to get 41 meters behind them, as it was said. Again and again the sound of "On your marks, get set, go" sounded across the square - and the respective starter raced across the square to the applause of the visitors while their time was being taken. According to the organizers, around 1000 guests watched the spectacle.

There are now such races all over Germany for different dog breeds. It's usually not about ambition and performance, the focus is on fun for dog and owner. Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt foxes and badgers. It comes in many different shapes and hair lengths, short, long or coarse.
