Dozens of people have died in new floods in Pakistan. In the province of Sindh in the south of the country alone, at least 50 people died after further heavy rains, the authorities said.

The floods, which can be traced back to the heaviest monsoon rains in more than three decades, have already cost the lives of almost 1,300 people since mid-June. According to the government, more than 33 million people in the country with around 220 million inhabitants are affected by the floods.

The heavy rains have burst the Indus River, which rises in the Himalayas and flows into the Arabian Sea in southern Pakistan. With the support of the military, rescue workers are attempting to evacuate the affected areas.

In Pakistan, the annual monsoon season usually lasts from June to September. Natural disasters such as floods, droughts and landslides have increased in the South Asian country in recent years. The government and experts blame climate change for this.
