Devaluations because of mineral oil: Baby starter milk at Ökotest: Only two products are highly recommended

The debate about the benefits of natural breastfeeding has been raging for years. But the fact is: by no means all parents can or want to only rely on breast milk. However, a recent test by Ökotest shows that when it comes to supplementary feeding or full feeding of an infant with baby milk, you should choose the right product.

The testers brought a total of 14 Babmilch products to the laboratory. It is starter milk with the addition "1". This differs from the so-called pre-food in that small amounts of starch have been added. This makes it a little thicker than the pre-milk, which contains lactose as the only carbohydrate. "In the end, the difference is minimal," emphasizes Ökotest.

However, the biggest difference to the test of Pre-Milch last year is pleasing. In this test, the testers still found residues of mineral oils in almost all milk mixtures. But: The amount has decreased compared to last time. In addition, the particularly harmful substances of aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons, MOAH for short, were not found in any of the products this time. They are partially carcinogenic.

But there is no complete all-clear. Traces of saturated petroleum hydrocarbons, called MOSH, presumably originating from oil residues in the production facilities, could also be found. They are also deposited in the body - for example in the liver - their effects are not yet known, warns Ökotest.

This is particularly problematic for baby milk: Lebenswert organic starter milk1, Bioland from Holle at a price of 8.49 euros per 500 grams is devalued because it has an increased MOSH content, explains Ökotest. With the overall grade "sufficient" it is the last in the test.

The two best infant formula products clearly differ from this: Ökotest finds little reason for the Nestlé Beba infant formula for 10.59 euros per 500 grams and the Aptamil Profutura Duo Advance infant formula 1 from the manufacturer Nutricia (14.34 euros per 500 g). to complain. Both are "very good" and therefore the most recommended choice for parents. Four other products score "good", the rest are "satisfactory".
