Darmstadt-Dieburg: The heater causes a gas alarm in an apartment building

A defective heating system in an apartment building in southern Hesse has caused increased carbon monoxide levels. Eight residents of the building in Babenhausen (Darmstadt-Dieburg district) complained of nausea and headaches on Tuesday evening, the police in Darmstadt said on Wednesday. A 14-year-old was taken to hospital as a precaution.

According to the police, the increased levels of carbon monoxide were due to a petroleum heater on the ground floor, and the gas then reached a family apartment upstairs via a shaft. After careful ventilation, however, the apartment was habitable again. The police are now investigating.

Carbon monoxide, or carbon monoxide for short, is a dangerous respiratory poison that you cannot see, smell or taste. Those affected often do not notice when they inhale it, because there are no typical symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath.
