Finally mulled wine and Christmas spirit on Marienplatz again: the Christmas market opened in Munich on Monday. After a two-year Corona break, it was really time for that, said Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) from the balcony of the neo-Gothic town hall. At the opening, he and the many visitors on Marienplatz counted down the seconds until the Christmas lights went on on the 25-metre-high Christmas tree: "3, 2, 1 - light".

Reiter is happy, but can hardly escape the sometimes more, sometimes less contemplative hustle and bustle around the town hall, which lasts until December 24th: "For me, that means that my office will smell of mulled wine and Platzerl for the next few weeks." , he confessed. During the day it's "sometimes a joke, but I live with it".

3,000 economical LED lights will burn daily from 4:00 p.m. until January 6, 2023 on the Siberian silver fir tree from Hohenpeissenberg (Weilheim-Schongau district). They are intended to spread a homely atmosphere, just like the stalls on Marienplatz and in the surrounding streets, which offer arts and crafts, Christmas decorations and a nativity scene, as well as drinks and delicacies such as bratwurst or gingerbread.

The Augsburg Christmas market should also start on Monday. It is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany, against the backdrop of the magnificent Renaissance town hall. The world-famous Nuremberg Christmas market begins on Friday (November 25).
