After a knife attack at a school in the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo, numerous students mourned the death of their teacher. On Tuesday, they laid flowers and lit candles in front of the school.

"We are outraged by what has happened here, especially because we know that it is very common in schools," said the head of the local student association, Luísa Martins, the news portal G1. "There is a feeling of powerlessness," reported the student Evelyn. "Psychologists need to be brought into schools to provide support."

On Monday, a 13-year-old attacked several teachers and a student with a knife at school. A 71-year-old teacher was seriously injured and eventually died in hospital of cardiac arrest. Four other victims were wounded, but their lives were not in danger.

The motive for the knife attack is still unclear. According to the Brazilian news agency "Agencia Brasil", initial information indicated a dispute between the young perpetrator and another student last week. On Brazilian television, citing parents, it was said that physical violence was the order of the day at the school.
