After the knife attack by an Italian in a shopping center in Milan, none of the injured are in mortal danger. This was reported by the Italian media on Friday morning, a few hours after the evening incident in a supermarket in a suburb of the metropolis in which an employee was killed.

The professional soccer player Pablo Marí from the first division club AC Monza, who was injured in the attack on his back and happened to be in the shop with his family, was operated on on Friday. According to the Serie A club, the surgery on two muscles went well, Marí had to stay in the clinic for another two to three days. After that, a break of at least two months is planned, before the defender can train again.

No terrorist background

As it turned out during the night, it was a former professional footballer who overpowered the 46-year-old attacker. "He screamed, that's it," Massimo Tarantino told reporters after the incident, adding that he himself was not a hero. The 51-year-old played in Serie A for SSC Naples, Inter Milan and Bologna, among others, and was still manager in Serie B last season. Together with other passers-by, Tarantino held the attacker on the ground in the evening until the Carabinieri arrived.

As reported by the media, the alleged perpetrator is mentally ill; a terrorist background was quickly ruled out. The 46-year-old, who has no criminal record, is in custody on charges of murder and attempted murder.

According to media reports, the Carrefour supermarket chain, in whose branch in the "Milano Fiori" shopping center the attack happened, decided to remove all sharp objects such as knives from the shelves throughout Italy. It is feared that the attack could provoke imitators to similar acts.
