An Australian has been named the best coffee barista in the world: 31-year-old Anthony Douglas faced five competitors in the final of the World Barista Championships, which were held this year as part of the Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE). among others from Great Britain, Canada and the USA.

Douglas served the judges three creations based on a Colombian coffee whose beans were fermented anaerobically for 80 hours, i.e. in the absence of external oxygen - and delighted the taste buds of the testers.

Enriched espresso as a signature drink

The highlight of the 15-minute presentation was the so-called signature drink: Douglas combined espresso with lacto-fermented passion fruit, Colombian honey and cold-brewed hibiscus tea. Douglas uses the latest techniques in his creations, such as cryogenic milk - a method that uses pressure and slow heating to concentrate flavor.

Douglas himself is from Melbourne. Since 2014 he has been head barista at Axil Coffee Roasters, a coffee shop with various branches in the metropolis.

The World Barista Championship is the most important international coffee competition and is held in a different city every year by the organization World Coffee Events. The competition aims to promote both the production of high-quality coffee and the profession of barista. About 50 candidates from all over the world take part in the World Championship.

Melbourne is considered Australia's coffee metropolis. The World Barista Championships took place here in 2013. On average, Australia's second largest city imports 30 tons of coffee beans per day - this means that around three million cups of coffee can be prepared every day.
