Cannes' most anticipated films

The 75th Cannes Film Festival, which has been in full swing since Tuesday, has moviegoers all over the world dreaming with its tantalizing line-up and its red carpets teeming with stars. The good news is that several of the films presented this year on the Croisette will soon also be shown here. Here are five that will land on our screens soon.

As expected, Tom Cruise's visit to the Croisette monopolized all the media attention last Wednesday during the preview of the sequel to the 1986 cult film. Maverick and his gang can certainly say mission accomplished : less than a week before the North American release of the film, the first reviews are glowing and the buzz is enormous. What does David Cronenberg have in store for us with this new horror thriller presented in competition this Tuesday and expected on our screens in early June? What we already know is that the renowned Canadian filmmaker is returning to body horror, his favorite genre that characterizes many of his most influential films, including The Fly and Crash. Bringing together a host of international stars (including Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart) on screen, Les crimes du futur takes place in the near future where a performance artist stages the metamorphosis of his organs in shows. In an interview with the specialized site Indiewire, Cronenberg has already warned that he expected several spectators to leave the room during the first minutes of the film. New scandal on the horizon?

After presenting two of his previous films (Moulin Rouge, The Magnificent Gatsby), Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann will be back on the Croisette in a few days to launch with great fanfare the highly anticipated new musical film on the life and work of 'Elvis Presley. Chosen to play the King on screen, young actor Austin Butler has already drawn praise from Lisa Mary Presley (Elvis' daughter) and Priscilla Presley (the singer's ex-wife) for his performance in the film. Another curiosity of the film: Tom Hanks, who plays the famous impresario of Elvis. The feature hits our screens on June 24.

It looks like we won't have to wait 3,000 years before we can experience this new offering from Australian filmmaker George Miller (Mad Max) which was unveiled to Cannes audiences last night. Described by Miller himself as "anti-Mad Max", Three Thousand Years Waiting for You features a lonely Briton (Tilda Swinton) who, during a trip to Istanbul, meets a genius (Idris Elba) who offers him to grant three wishes. However, this bitter and apathetic woman will realize that she is incapable of imagining a single one. The film's Quebec release date has been set for August 31.

The only Quebec feature film selected at Cannes this year, Falcon Lake, by actress and director Charlotte Le Bon, will have its world premiere this Sunday at the Directors' Fortnight, a parallel section of the Festival. The film, freely adapted from the novel A Sister, by Bastien Vivès, tells the story of a 13-year-old teenager (Joseph Engel) who leaves Paris with his family to spend the summer in a chalet near a lake, in Quebec. A strange carnal game will develop between the teenager and the daughter of his parents' friends (Sara Montpetit), who is a little older than him. Falcon Lake hits our screens this fall.
