Barry and Honey Sherman were brutally murdered in their own home. In December 2017, Barry Sherman's body was found by the swimming pool in the basement of his Toronto home. Next to him lay his wife Honey. Both hung by belts from the pool railing. Initially, the police assumed it was an extended suicide, but then the indications of a violent crime quickly increased. Five years later, however, there is still no trace of the murderer or murderers.
Canadian Barry Sherman was 75 years old and was the founder and CEO of the drug company Apotex. With the company he had earned billions, but also made many enemies. At the time of his death, he was worth $3.2 billion, according to Forbes, and was the twelfth richest person in Canada. His four children want to use the money to advance the investigation and have offered a reward for information on the perpetrators.
Shortly after the double murder, they offered a reward of ten million Canadian dollars, which corresponds to almost seven million euros. However, the perpetrators could not be caught. On the fifth anniversary of their parents' deaths, the family increased the amount by a whopping $25 million. The reward is now the equivalent of 24.2 million euros.
"No conclusion will be reached until those responsible for this evil act are brought to justice," said Jonathan Sherman, the murdered couple's son. Even five years after the death of the parents, the shock is still deep: "I am overwhelmed by pain, loss and grief, and these feelings are constantly increasing." However, there is still no hot lead.
"My parents deserved to enjoy the fruits of their labor and spend their twilight years with their family like all grandparents do. I continue to miss my parents more than I can describe and I will always be haunted by what happens to them is," Sherman said in a press statement. Every day since the death of his parents has been "a nightmare".
The children of the billionaire couple got involved in the investigation soon after the fact. The police initially wanted to dismiss the case as an extended suicide because there were no signs of a break-in. However, the family hired their own private investigators and commissioned a report that showed Barry and Honey Sherman had been tied up before their deaths. Only then did the police investigate for murder – so far without success.
Again and again there were suspicions, but the suspicions were never sufficient for an arrest. Last December, a day after the fourth anniversary of the couple's death, the police released video footage of a suspect. According to the Canadian broadcaster CBS, the police in Toronto do not want to comment on the current status of the investigation.
