Bundesliga: Niko Kovac appointed coach of Wolfsburg

Niko Kovac has been appointed coach of Wolfsburg until 2025, the German Premier League club announced in a statement on Tuesday.

“I am a child of the Bundesliga. I am very enthusiastic and motivated to start another fruitful chapter with Wolves,” said the former Monaco coach, dismissed in December, quoted in the press release.

"The team has enormous potential and the conditions are in place for optimal and successful work," added Kovac, 50, who takes over from Florian Kohfeldt, sacked nine days ago after a disappointing 12th place in the league for Wolfsburg.

This is the third stint on a German bench for the Croatian technician, who has already coached Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayern Munich.

The coach has already achieved the cup/championship double with Bayern in 2019, after winning the German cup with Frankfurt by beating Munich in the final.

Kovac also coached Croatia in Brazil at the 2014 World Cup.

As a player, the ex-Croatian international played 240 matches in the Bundesliga with clubs Hertha Berlin, Bayern, Leverkusen and Hamburg.
