BUND: Environmentalists: Complaint against Polish coal mine

The Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation in Saxony (BUND) claims to have submitted a complaint to the European Commission together with partner organizations. The organization announced on Tuesday that the Commission should start infringement proceedings against the Czech-Polish agreement on the Turów coal mine in Poland.

The coal mine affects the water supply in the area and leads to damage to houses. The mine operated by PGE between Czech, German and Polish communities has caused the groundwater level to rise dramatically. In cities like Zittau, people's homes would be destabilized and cracks in the walls would be caused.

According to BUND, the Czech government is ignoring the environmental disaster. "The Czech government has agreed to an illegal situation on its own territory and forfeited its ability to do anything about it," said Petra Kalenská, a lawyer at the Frank Bold Society. Now only the European Commission can ensure justice.
