The Montrealer, fifth in this category at the Tokyo Olympics, defeated American Naomi Melissa Graham 5-0. She therefore advances to the quarter-final round on Monday against Australian Caitlin Anne Parker, ninth in Tokyo last summer.

Thibeault, 25, had taken advantage of a first-round bye and she was stepping into the arena for the first time in the Turkish capital. Taller and younger than her 36-year-old opponent, the Quebecer took advantage of her long reach. His opponent for his part regularly forced melee.

At the 2019 Worlds, Thibeault was on the third step of the podium.
