BM Guadalajara celebrated its return to the Sacyr Asobal Handball League this weekend after beating Barça's subsidiary 31-35 and taking advantage of Fertiberia Puerto Sagunto's setback, which fell against UBU San Pablo Burgos 33-35.
The match at the Ciudad Deportiva Joan Gamper started evenly and it was not until the end of the first half that the Alcarreños took the lead, reaching the break with the score at 17-20. At the beginning of the second half they put in another gear and in the 45th minute the advantage reached eight goals (23-31), a distance impossible to overcome. Alberto Díaz, Marcos Dorado and Hemal Hamzic were the top scorers with seven, six and five goals, respectively.
The purples had descended last year to the Silver Division of Honor after eleven years in a row in the highest category. The drama coincided with the retirement of goalkeeper José Javier Hombrados, a world handball legend who continued to play at the top level at the age of 49.
The Silver Division of Honor has been divided into two phases. In the first there were two groups of ten teams, in which the best went on to play for the title. BM Guadalajara finished second in group A and, so far, in this second phase they have won six games and lost two. Now, with two days to go before the end of the championship, they are the leader with 23 points, two more than Club Cisne Colegio Los Sauces, so they are very close to becoming champions.
In statements to 'nuevaalcarria.com', the president, Alejandro Ortíz, is euphoric: "All this has been milk." Ortíz believes that the great architect of success has been the coach, Juan Carlos Requena, who "is a very prepared man and has managed to make a pineapple in the locker room", for which he is going to be renewed to command the project at Asobal .
The club from Alcarria will celebrate promotion this Saturday, starting at 7:00 p.m., when they will face Fertiberia Puerto Sagunto at the 'David Santamaría' sports center.
