Basketball: Hamburg Towers win play-in duel in Oldenburg

The Veolia Towers Hamburg can still hope to take part in the quarter-finals of the German basketball championship. In the first game of the play-ins, head coach Benka Barloschky's team surprisingly won 93:81 (46:47) against the slightly favored EWE Baskets Oldenburg on Tuesday evening and will face the loser in the decisive duel on Thursday for the last available place the second play-in encounter between Bonn and Ludwigsburg. For Oldenburg, however, the season is over.

The guests got off to a better start in the game. After around two and a half minutes, Aljami Durham made the lead 10-0 with a layup. Oldenburg then improved and made it 22:27 at the end of the first quarter. Hamburg were also initially more effective in the second half, but coach Pedro Calles' team managed another comeback. After a layup by Geno Crandall to make it 44:43, the Baskets finally took the lead for the first time.

The 6,200 spectators in the arena saw the next twist after the break. Again the Towers got off to a better start and pulled ahead with 16 points in the third quarter. In the final section, Hamburg kept Oldenburg at bay and didn't let the victory be taken away from them. The best throwers were Crandall (Oldenburg/18) and Vincent King (Hamburg/24).
