Basketball: Freyer takes over from Jovovic at MBC Syntainics

Basketball Bundesliga club MBC Syntainics parted ways with coach Igor Jovovic and thus reacted to the sporting decline. Instead of Jovovoc, Ingo Freyer will look after the Weißenfels club in the last six Bundesliga games. The club announced on Monday evening. Freyer will be in charge of the team's training this Tuesday and will make his debut on Saturday (6 p.m.) in the home game against Veolia Towers Hamburg.

The team from Weißenfels recently suffered seven defeats in a row and on Sunday also lost the guest appearance at the penultimate Fraport Skyliners with 65:71. The lead on a relegation zone is only two points.

"The decision was not easy for us, but after the defeat against our direct competitor Frankfurt, the situation is very serious. We have to take every opportunity to stay in the league," explained team manager Martin Geissler. "We're hoping for a new impetus from Ingo Freyer. He knows the Bundesliga and the fight for staying up. He gave us a clear game plan to get as many as three wins in the last six games of the season."

Freyer wore the Central German jersey as a player from 1998 to 2001. The 39-time national player rose to the Bundesliga with Weißenfels and made it into the playoffs twice with MBC.

Freyer began his coaching career in 2004 at his home club SC Rist Wedel in the regional league. He coached Phoenix Hagen from 2007 to 2016 and JobStairs Gießen 46ers from 2017 to 2020. Most recently, he was in charge of EWE Baskets Oldenburg, which he took over in January 2022 from the bottom of the table and, with twelve wins from 18 games, led to eleventh place.
