The mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, has urged the Catalan Generalitat, presided over by the ERC pro-independence party, Pere Aragonés, to "take its hands off our city and separate our festivities from the Bonfires of San Juan from their pro-independence entelechies ». "It is indecency", continues Barcala, "to link our festivals with those Catalan countries that the nationalists have invented, as it is also to include Alicante as one of the four capitals that would form part of that territory with which, unfortunately, dreams an important part of the tripartite left that governs our Valencian Community».
Barcala has made these statements as a result of the decision of the Generalitat, presided over by the independentist Pere Aragonés, to catalog in its official documents the commemoration of the feast of Saint John as "the feast of the Catalan countries", which includes Catalonia, Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community.
The website of the Department of Culture of the Catalan regional government makes various references to the commemoration of June 24 as typical of the Catalan countries.
«It is not the first time that the Government of Catalonia has tried to appropriate Alicante's hallmarks, because let us remember that a few years ago they came to include the Bonfire celebrations as part of the Catalan festivities, and I tell you one thing: with our celebrations and traditions are not played”, has added the first mayor of Alicante.
«In this month of May we already learned about the visit to our city of Mr. Oriol Junqueras, who said he was on tour in our Community», adds Barcala. "It is necessary to remember that Mr. Junqueras was convicted of the attempted independence coup in Catalonia and was later pardoned by the socialist government after his ERC party made possible the investiture of Sánchez as president."
“Everything that is happening is a shame and it is indecency that the parties that insult Alicante and the people of Alicante are the partners of the government of Pedro Sánchez, and the friends of the left-wing nationalist tripartite of the government chaired by Mr. Ximo Puig”, Barcala has concluded.
The popular group will take to the next plenary session of the Alicante City Council an initiative to demand a rectification from the Generalitat of Catalonia.
