Baden-Württemberg: bodies recovered after fire in Gernsbach

One day after the house fire in Gernsbach, Baden-Württemberg, the identity of the three bodies found in the ruins has not yet been determined. Forensic doctors have to clarify whether it is actually the children aged 4, 8 and 14 who were missing after the fire. This investigation takes time, said a spokesman for the Offenburg police on Friday. The three bodies were discovered on Thursday by fire brigade rescue workers and later recovered from the burned-down house.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. The investigation into the fire continues. The Federal Agency for Technical Relief stabilized parts of the ruins so that the building can be entered.

Look for other possible victims

The search for other possible victims continued into the evening. In the privately rented former hotel in the district of Reichental, mainly Eastern European working-class families and individuals lived. According to police information, between 20 and 30 people were reported in the house at times. It is not known how many were actually in the building when the fire broke out. The investigators assume at least 16 people. 13 people were looked after after the fire.

Three residents were taken to hospital with minor injuries. A police officer was also treated in a clinic after the operation.
